Four Common Stinking Thinking Phrases and the Verses that Shut Them Up

The amount of issues that I have heard over two decades on the other side of my pastoral desk are as diverse as issues come. From everyday stresses to deep grief and abuse, no matter the issue, I don’t remember one time stinking thinking had not seeped into the issue itself. Whether it be “I’ll never get out,” or “I can’t do this alone,” or even “The world would be better without me,” every deeply rooted thought has a Biblical truth that quietens it.
Here are a few of my favorite for phrases that are sadly all too often the inner dialogue of people going through difficult times.

Stinking Thinking #1: “I should just leave this world.”
Biblical Truth: “I shall live and not die and declare the works of the Lord!” Psalm 118:17
This is a bold statement and whether you feel it or not when you say it, it is truth demons must recognize and truth our minds must submit to.

Stinking Thinking #2: “It’s been too long for God to fulfill His promise now.”
Biblical Truth: “Let God be true and every man a liar!” Romans 3:4
God is not contained to time, waiting, direction or circumstance like we think He is.

Stinking Thinking #3: “It’s too late.”
Biblical Truth: “Though your beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.” Job 8:7
It’s not too late. Job lost a lot but regained double for what he had left.

Stinking Thinking #4: “It’s too broken.” Or “I’m too sick.”
Biblical Truth: “With man it is impossible but with God all things are possible” Matthew 19:26
Jesus spoke these words Himself. They are written in red. Jesus did many seemingly impossible things and He also promised we would do even greater things than these!

When your brain screams negative things that sounds rational or even like your own thoughts, it doesn’t mean you have to receive them. It also does not mean it is your own thought. We know that the devil cannot read our minds but he can impress on us suggestions of how to feel, how to think about ourselves or others. Sometimes those thoughts may feel unending, but when we fight these lies with the truth we teach our brain to remember what the Lord said and our spirit begins to align with God’s way of thinking. Sometimes these types of thoughts need medicine. That’s ok. In every instance, medicine or no medicine, these thoughts also need JESUS.
As you navigate stinking thinking remember that the Lord is with you and He loves you deeply. Don’t let the enemy convince you otherwise. Rest in Who He is. Speak life over yourself daily and get in the Word of God. When we know how to combat the lies of the enemy… they get a whole lot quieter.
If you need to talk this week or in a future session, code Change makes your hour session $30 until Sunday. This code is good on future sessions as long as they are booked before midnight on Sunday evening.
Praying for you and believing you are more than able,
Pastor Brooke
