Feeling Safe in Unprecedented Times: 4 Truths to Hold on To

“There is nothing new under the sun.” But if you were to ask your algorithm? There would appear to be around a million new reasons to be bothered, to be scared, or to pay a little too much attention to the evil going on around you. If I’ve learned one thing about the devil, it is that he loves any and all attention because it takes our eyes off Jesus.
Today, I wanted to take a second out of my workday to point your eyes back to Jesus. To remind you where your compass is and to give you some prayer/thought life points to get you going back in the right direction in times when you feel afraid…

1. God does NOT sleep.
The book of Psalm tells us that He who watches over us does not slumber or sleep. That means you don’t have to sit up and stand watch. You don’t have to doom-scroll or order freeze dried potatoes. (Unless you are into that sort of thing.) Seriously. God has been keeping watch over all this stuff for a long time and somehow you and I both ended up on this great, big, beautiful spinning orb. He knows what He is doing. Even when we don’t. We can rest in that.

2. God IS just and He protects.
In The Gospel According to Alice: The Lost Chapters, I didn’t get to include one of my favorite Christian novels. The public domain limits me sometimes. (In fact, it’s follow-up was one of my favorite movie premiers I ever covered because of that reason. If you ever wanted to see any of my younger jouranlistic work, here you go.) One of my favorite quotes about Who God is came from the inkwell of C.S. Lewis. In The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, Aslan was a representation of God’s character.
“Aslan is a lion- the Lion, the great Lion." "Ooh" said Susan. "I'd thought he was a man. Is he-quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion"..."Safe?" said Mr Beaver ..."Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.”
In other words, God is safe to us. He is not safe to principalities of darkness, evil or strongholds. Like any good parent, He is safe to His children and a force to be reckoned with otherwise when necessary. Lewis once said to “tame” God would never work because that would only weaken Him. He cannot be weakened because He cannot be tamed and this makes Him holy.

3. Surely goodness and mercy WILL follow you all the days of your life.
King David said this one. When you feel afraid claim victory over your life by declaring Biblical truths like this one over yourself and your family. The enemy will always meet you with worry and a lie. Fight lies with the Truth. The Word of God is a weapon. Use it well!

4. He does not need our help to “fix” it.
Do you really think for one second God needs our help? Nope. God gives us jobs, assignments and gifts but when it comes to needing us? He doesn’t really. He just wants us and loves us. He doesn’t need our help or our worry to fix things beyond our control. Our trust and our faith are the best gifts we could give Him when we are afraid. God loves to be trusted.
I invite you to stop doomscrolling. The news will still be there tomorrow and another hundred years from now. If you must scroll, focus on the positive things. Pay attention to what you are feeding your thoughts and be sure to pour out anything that isn’t serving you. When you take time to reconnect with the truth of Who God is all day, you’ll have less room for worry.
I find He always points us back in the right direction even when we spin ourselves into the worry cycle on purpose. He is big enough for everything and anything you are facing, worried about or that crosses your FYP. He’s just God like that. If you need help remembering or feeling safe, you can always come sit in my
for a chat.
And with that? You can let it go now. Because He is faithful.
And He will still be that tomorrow.
Praying for you,
Pastor Brooke
