The desires of God’s heart are something we don’t often ask about. We focus a lot on the Bible verse that tells us that God will give us the desire of ours.
I don’t know about you but there was a time in my life that I was heavily focused on God but I also relied on this verse day to day. “If I keep giving it my best, God will give me the desires of my heart.” “If I am obedient, God will give me the desires of my heart.” Truthfully, He often did. However, a lot of times my desires didn’t go very far.
I dated a lot of the wrong people. I accepted a lot of things that I would never accept today, and I often thought that maybe that was ok if God had allowed me to be in these spaces. But the truth was that God does give us the desires of our hearts but sometimes it can simply be so that we recognize that we deserve more…
And that our desires are faulty.
I remember a time in my life when I began to pray strongly for the desires of God’s heart. That His desires would be my own. God was so faithful to do that for me. When I tell you that it changed my taste in life experiences, in people, in things I liked, even food, I mean that fully.
I learned that I disliked unreliable men with short tempers.
I learned that I loved macarons.
I learned that I loved DC, the swamp, and planes with a little turbulence…
I learned that I loved to be still. And I loved to travel too, and not just for ministry.
I went from pastoring in a building to pastoring abroad. I went from rushing to relaxed. I went from my desires to God’s desires. And somewhere in here… I found so much peace.
Today, if things just seem like they always falter, I couldn’t invite you enough to pray for the desires of God’s heart. It might look different, but I promise you won’t ever go back to what it was.
God’s desires are so much better than mine and I learn more and more that His are the only desires I want. I pray today that you learn that too.
