One day it’s going to happen for you.
That thing that you pray for.
But it won’t be anything like you thought it would be.
Maybe you’re waiting on a spouse, or a child, a dream job or a chance to just smile again.
Imagine everyone is sleeping.
You’re alone on the breakfast table, tucked in a terry cloth plum robe and all is quiet. You’re sipping your coffee, but it’s a little too hot. So you just let it warm your hands. Snow lightly dusts the outdoors. It’s not the foot of snow you hoped would come for Christmas but it’s still snow. You’ll keep power and WiFi.
You look at the trial of dirty socks and little left behind things that need doing. And you’re a little bummed you have to pick them up later. It wasn’t like that before. But you’ll also smile because it’s everything you ever wanted.
Just with the everyday-ness of it all.
I wanted to remind you that one day it is going to happen for you.
But take time now to enjoy life, the holidays, being on your own, or fighting for your marriage…
Because one day, believe it or not, you’ll miss the lonelier nights. The nights it was just you and God and maybe a cat or dog. You’ll miss being able to be as loud as you wanted on your way to get a 3 a.m. cup of water. You’ll miss your uninterrupted bath. You’ll even miss how nuts your kids act when they sneak and eat your tea set sugar at 10 pm. You’ll even miss the days when you didn’t have much and you’ll long for nostalgic days when you made Christmas gifts for your siblings because money was so sparse. No matter what your dreaming of and what will change…
Enjoy the now. You’re living in the prayers you used to pray. And if you allow the Lord to order your steps you can trust that you’ll live in these newer prayers too.
I love that God cares enough to give us lonely time with Him. And for some of us, wild hair kids who keep us up a little late. One day you’ll look back on your life and you’ll celebrate the parts you were praying hardest most because you’ll finally see the blessings that were right under your nose.
